I agree whole-heartedly with the other positive reviewers. This book is fun, easy, filled with ideas that are not difficult but that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Best of all, I periodically leave it on our kitchen table and my children love to skim through it and make suggestions. As a busy Mom who wants to spend time outside but often feels pulled in many directions, it helps inspire and motivate me, too! I really like the author's practical, peaceful, aim for good not perfect approach. She would appeal to a wide variety of people living in various urban to rural settings. On another note, I also have Rebecca Cohen's "Curiosity Cards" and they are great! We used one tonight at dinner "If you could do more of one thing everyday, what would it be?" I use them whenever we have to wait. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FQGCUG?redirect=true&ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0
What a great book! Many of the ideas are new, but even the more obvious ones are really great to have in one spot for easy reference. I'm sure I'm not the only parent who doesn't have a running repertoire of outside games and activities in my head at all times. With this book you don't have to worry about running out of ideas.
I really love this book. I bought it because I know I should get my kids outside more, but sometimes I run out of ideas. This book is great for that! It is very encouraging, but not preachy at all - it has a great discussion of why you should get your kids outside that I found very inspiring. The 15 minute goal is great because it's very doable. It is so hot in Texas in the summer that I often just can't stand the thought of going outside, but knowing it's just for 15 minutes is usually enough to get me out - and once we're out, we usually stay out for much longer than 15 minutes. There are so many ideas in this book, and they are grouped by month, which makes it really easy to find some seasonally appropriate ideas. Sometimes I read one of her ideas and it inspires a totally different activity, or I modify one of her activities in some way. Getting the kids outside works magic. Bad attitudes disappear in fresh air!
Nothing new here. Most of the ideas in this book are no brainers (look at the clouds) or just repeats of prior ideas (plant peas. plant perennials) I was not inspired by this at all. The book also doesn't take bad weather into account. How do you take your kids outside in the streaming rain and make it fun? Or in hot humid weather or in arctic wind? No suggestions are offered. I thought that a book that talks about getting outside 365 days of the year would at least touch those topics.
This is a great resource to have at your fingertips. Its brilliance is in how easy it is to implement many of the ideas. It also contains nice commentary that made me rethink my attitude about outdoor time. That was surprising considering I'd spent decades playing outside! I tried out the library copy and decided this was worth having on hand.
This book is a list of 365 days of activities to do with children outdoors (Duh!) It is divided by seasons, months and days, and though not all activities are appropriate for all children, you will easily find a couple a week. Some will entail planning and some will be difficult for apt. residents, but she offers some solutions. Well worth the price.
Children spend too much time inside! This is a great book. I found the overall concept of the book more encouraging and helpful than the individual activities that were suggested, but still a book that has a prominent place on our book shelf. It has encouraged me to spend at least 15 minutes outside with the kids everyday...even if I or they don't want to...no matter what the weather. And when we need a little something extra, I can flip through the pages and get some ideas.
This is a great book to have on hand! Not a purchase you will regret. Just keep in mind many of the activities aren't useful if you have toddler-age children or younger. I bought this when our oldest was 2 and never could get much use out of it. The activities are generally geared toward older children. But he's 4 now and I know we'll be using it quite frequently this summer!
