Well, these Dover editions have always been a good choice for music teachers and composers who don't want to spend on an expensive book, but who would like to have these scores available for reference and orchestration technique analysis. The covers are always handsome, and the books will stay in good condition if treated with care. In my case, I was especially interested in how Tchaikovsky orchestrated the overture to the sleeping beauty, which has always seemed to me as an overture of surpassing dramatic power combined with a wonderful epic, fairy tale like atmosphere, foreshadowing scenes to come. I was surprised by some details I discovered when I finally had the score in my hands, like the way Tchaikovsky added two cornets to the brass section, in addition to the usual two trumpets, and the spectacular crashing sound in the middle is not a gong (as I thought) but a "tam tam", played very loudly. That is the part where the evil fairy arrives into the castle, but Tchaikovsky put such a strength into this moment that it would be easy to picture mighty dragons descending into the hall, instead of just one evil witch (no matter how evil). These books contains some of the best moments of both ballets, so it is an excellent introduction into these work's orchestration. If I wanted a complete Tchaikovsky ballet, I would rather choose the nutcracker, and indeed I did (Dover has a complete print of this one). I don't care what anybody says on the subject, I'm convinced The Nutcracker is the best of the three. But there is no denying that Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty have many great musical moments, impossible to ignore.

Dover Publications prints the clearest, easiest to read music scores available to the public. They can also be used by conductors at any level of performance and for study in music schools. This score is an excellent example.

As always, Tchaikovsky's finely crafted melodies flow from the page. The binding and print are easy to read and the paper is designed to last. Watching the notes dance across the page brings to mind the twirling ballerinas and wonderful stories that underlie these two masterpieces.The Only regret that you'll have regarding this issue is that there is not a complete score out for either of these two monuments of the ballet world.

I teach documentary film production at a university and use it as a text. It's the same book we used when I took documentary in grad school 40 years ago. It is still the definitive history of the form.

BEST BOOK ON DOCUMENTARY AND NON-FICTION FILMS EVER!

As far as cinema studies goes,this is one of the classics; full of valuable information, reliable interpretations and insightfull comments.If you're nterested in the numerous facets of documentaries, you could do much worse than start with Barnouw's seminal book.Also, this is a very good example of great academic writing: clever but intriguing (granted, it's easier to write like that in writing history than theory, but nevertheless, you'll probably read this book with great pleasure).Highly recommended!

It was not long ago that I treated an irrepressible 8 year old boy at the children's hospital where I worked. This kid was something else. He was smart, articulate and bubbly. We got to talking about books, and I told him about Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' (one of my long-standing favourites by that author). "Have you read Captain Underpants?" he asked me. Then he proceeded to regale me with the story of Mr Krupp and Harold and George. I was intrigued.At the follow-up appointment, my patient brought me one of his own copies of Captain Underpants, so I could see what he was going on about. I promised him the next time he came for an appointment, I would have read the whole series. His mom told me later, "You're the only doctor here who's willing to read Captain Underpants. You're doing pretty well."And here I am. I read Captain Underpants and I thoroughly loved it. It is one of the most banned books in libraries in the US, which probably goes to show you that it is extremely effective at engaging its target audience. I laughed in delight, reading the adventures of Harold and George, and remembered all the childhood hours I spent with my brother thinking up practical jokes that landed us in trouble again and again. I remembered the stink bombs, the fart spray, the whoopee cushions, and simply remembered what it was like to be a kid.I have read a few of the reviews that express concern that the series encourages defiance of authority, but I have several points to make in response. Firstly, the authority figures in the book should be challenged. Quite frankly, if kids had to attend a school where the principal punished naughty behaviour by making them clean his house and mow his lawn, I would mount a protest. That is a highly inappropriate punishment. Secondly, I seriously doubt that reading Captain Underpants is going to turn a kid into a criminal or miscreant of the justice system. If you really looked at the kinds of things that turn kids into criminals, reading books is not one of them. Thirdly, Captain Underpants was wonderfully imaginative. It turns mundane things into objects of great potential (nefarious or otherwise). I love that it encourages kids to dream and imagine, and not be confined by the dictates of our time. If not for challenging ideas, we wouldn't know that the earth revolved around the sun, or that gravity makes apples fall to the ground, or that spores from a fungus (penicillin) could be critical in treating infection.Let's let kids enjoy being kids. Heaven knows, growing up isn't much fun. And for the love of all that is cotton-y and pre-shrunk, if they love the Captain, let them read it.

Around when I was in third grade and all the other kids were reading these books, I was very hesitant to read these books and didn't want anything to do with them. About four years later I saw the first trailer for the Captain Underpants movie and didn't think it would really be worth seeing. A few months later I started watching the trailer nonstop and searched YouTube for every possible scene in the movie. A couple of days later I decided that before I saw the movie itself that I should read as many of the books I could so that I wouldn't have to handle the wait much longer. Ten minutes later I finished the first epic novel.I bet you're wondering why my opinion on these novels changed so suddenly. You see, once I saw a trailer for the movie saying that the critics thought it was heartwarming, far more emotional then you'd ever believe, and about the power of friendship and imagination, I immediately fell in love with it. I became absolutely hypnotized by every trailer I saw on TV just like how Mr. Krupp became hypnotized by George's and Harold's ring. I then saw that it got 85% by Rotten Tomatoes and was astonished.The main reason why I fell in love with this franchise in the first place was because I thought it could possibly teach me something about friendship and what it means to truly have a best friend at your side at all times, since I didn't currently have a best friend at my side at all times like everyone else in school did.When I first read this book, I couldn't stop smiling at how close George and Harold seemed to be and just how clever they were with all their pranks. Overall, I don't think I'll ever stop reading these books anytime soon and that I'd recommend it to every child out there and not just the ones in the lower grades. I mean, I was thirteen when I first started reading these books and I'm even a girl! Also, whatever you do, don't be hesitant to read these books no matter how many there are! Trust me, you'll be surprised and humored by what you read in these novels.

This book is great! As a 12 year old, I'm obviously pretty old to be reading this book, but when I was younger, I read this book, and it definitely helped me love to read. I think that this book falls in the 3rd-4th grade age level.Some of the other reviews said that this book would make you hate school and make you say potty talk and stuff. Some even said it woul make your kid a "juvinile delinquet"... (not sure if I spelled that correctly). Anyway, I'm proud to say that (though I can't help the potty talk, but what type of kid can?) I have sraight A's, and I am very good at sports, though I don't know how that has much to do with anything!Anyway, I think that the main characters, George and Harold, are very clever and funny. They must be good at english and art too if they make comic books. I wish my school had signs where you can switch around the letters! Read the book and you will know what I'm talking about.Mr. Krupp is the perfect villian. He actually turns into "the greatest superhero of all time" with a 3-D Hypno Ring. Now the villian has turned into a hero, gets into lots of trouble, and George and Harold have lots of adventures.New villians show up through the series, and George and Harold fight them off. The wisecracks make this book halarious. There is also some random grown-up humor! The stories are not too complicated, and the comics are supercool!As a kid, I suggest to other kids to read this book. You will laugh. If you don't want to act like a kid, if you want to be all grown-upy, I don't know what's wrong with you, but I think that this book is totally worth reading. If you are 8 years old or 100, you will still love this book so much!!Wow, I must admit I'm proud of that last speech!

I just finished reading Breaking In from cover to cover, and have gone through like three highlighters in the process. I think to say that it is the best book any advertising student could ever read to prepare them for building their portfolio is a severe understatement. I'm redoing my whole portfolio from scratch because of the book, and for good reasons: the vast amount of insider information contained in this book is astonishing.I especially like the layout because [for the most part] William asks the same set of questions for everyone, so soon you'll see a pattern of what most of them are looking for. This will help you tailor your book to be the best it can be and have the greatest impact possible. Remember, it's your book, not anyone else's, so you, above all people, have to be ecstatic about it. But this book will be your greatest tool in terms of actually "Breaking In". If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

This book first caught my interest after I read a few interviews on its official site. I then purchased the book not really knowing how much it would truly help. A simple review cannot explain the value of this book. I would read between three to five interviews a day, take notes, and ponder on what I read. Then I did my best to apply it to me. I ended up learning a lot about the industry and eventually landed a job within my three months of reading.This book has done more for me than my schooling and work experience combined. I believe it's partly because the insights shared are from highly successful and intelligent people in advertising. This book can help you get to where you want to be regardless of where you're at now.

One of the most valuable books I've ever purchased. I'm a young writer trying to build a portfolio from home and the amount of advice given in this book is priceless. I'd pay $100 for this book knowing the quality of information it contains and in such abundance. Over 100 interviews with the people that you want to work for. If you're an advertising student or someone trying to break into this industry on their own, this book is a MUST HAVE.

Good book. Worthwhile - but trust me, take the plunge and go to a portfolio school. It's a people business and the connections you make are almost as important as your abilities.

I got more useful advice from this book than from two years of ad school. This is an amazing resource for students, juniors or anyone considering advertising as a career.

This is a brilliant idea. Most of these portfolio books are all the same: do a visual solution campaign, do a headline campaign, 5-7 print campaigns of 3 ads, etc, etc. Those books serve a purpose but (1) they are getting really dated as the industry changes faster and faster and (2) they are a one-size-fits-all approach. The industry isn't like that. What they look for at CP+B is going to be very different from McCann. Even within agencies, different people have different opinions. Anyway, this is a totally different format. It's just interviews with creative directors, from Dan Wieden and David Droga level down to senior creatives who would probably see your book before it gets to a CD. Also some recruiters (who are important players in the game) and a couple ad school directors. The questions/topics are pretty consistent: what do you look for in a student portfolio? How important is finish? Can sketches be enough? Long copy? Should you show non-advertising stuff and what kind of stuff works? How to get in touch with the CDs you want to work for, how to interview, job-hunting strategies...etc. It's pretty interesting to see how one creative director has a completely different opinion from another on certain questions. This is a great book for an ad student or someone making their first book. I actually think anyone in the industry would find this really interesting, even if they have a great job. It also gives you good insight into how these people think and what the industry is like, which might be great for someone who just wants to figure out if advertising is for them. However, if you have no experience and have taken no ad classes don't expect this book to teach you how to make an ad. This book is valuable for people who are a little more advanced than that. If you really want nuts and bolts basics about how to come up with concepts, etc. go with "Hey Whipple Squeeze This" by Luke Sullivan or "The Advertising Concept Book" by Pete Barry. Then read this. And you'll probably have to take some classes or go to ad school too. It's getting harder and harder to get into advertising as a creative.

Wow! Spencer gives us a very thorough look at advertising and what it takes to get in.Technology is leading advertising through a step-change, and it's an exciting time to break in. Spencer provides a detailed scan of portfolios and what Creative Directors (the people who hire you) are looking for. Spencer's interviews give abundant practical advice on job-hunting, interviewing, what not to do, etc. The interview style is a great strength of this book, because the information is unfiltered and remains free from a framework imposed by someone else. Spencer brings us to the experts with the feeling that nothing is lost in translation. While a terrific book for folks considering advertising as their main gig, the book's potential is much broader. With changes in advertising impacting so much of our world right now, anyone can benefit from understanding what the leaders of the field are thinking, and how they are poised to change with the changing technological tides.
