We saw patch Adams speak about 2 months ago at a Marian University Medical School function.He was dressed in his full clown outfit (minus his red nose) and spoke for about 80 minutes - pacing back and forth the whole time. He never sat down once which is fairly impressive as he was nearly 71 at the time.His message is a good one if not entirely a reasonable one. His book is the same. Human nature being what it is prevents most people who go to medical school (or pharmacy, law, dental, etc) from doing what he does. To succeed in these kind of environments you must be VERY driven and competitive - otherwise you won't make it through - probably wouldn't even get in in the first place. Speaking as a pharmacist of over 30 years I can tell you honestly that I would have never worked as hard as I did for as long as I did to do what Patch is doing. Even though I agree with the majority of what he says about our current medical system it's just not going to change as he would like - at least it won't anytime soon. When you graduate with around ***$200,000*** in debt from most professional programs you are kind of forced, at least for a long time, to earn as much money as reasonably possible just to pay that debt. My daughter just finished her 2nd year in med school and is already $75,000 in debt.But she is one of the lucky ones as many of her classmates were $45 to 50,000 in debt BEFORE STARTING MEDICAL SCHOOL and are now owe north of $150,000 - they still have 2 more years of med school plus residency. They will probably owe $250,000 to 300,000 before they even start their practice.Just to put this into the proper prospective a $250,000 loan at 4% for ***30 YEARS*** would be $1193 a month. In other words a decently nice house payment until you are about 58 or 59. This would be close to 14k a YEAR right off the top. As the VA the starting pay for newly minted MD's is around $110,000 you can see this is a huge hurdle if you want to practice as Patch wants you to.Unless this problem is solved there is quite simply no hope of changing the system much.Much of Patches views and opinions are rooted in 1960's ideology. In simple terms they are fairly close to what most of us would call communism.I believe what makes America different than most countries is our system where anyone can make it IF THEY TRY VERY HARD AND WORK FOR MANY YEARS. I feel I'm proof of that (and my wife even more than I). The first thing that kick started my life was the realization that life is harsh and tough - and often not entirely fair.For example, I have worked 28 Thanksgivings since 1981. How many of my readers have worked anything like this UNLESS you are a RN, MD, etc.HOWEVER IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE TO MAKE IF YOU DON'T GIVE UP.I enjoyed this book but it is, IMHO, outside of what most people want for their lives - Interesting read but not very practicable.I would rate this a 7.50 to 8.0 out of 10 - only recommended if you get it at your local library.

I wasted my money

I gave it as a farewell gift to my son who is entering medical school. He was excited to have it to read while on his flight to the east coast. Its an easy read, and not just for doctors or medical professionals, but for family and friends and even patients.

Dr. Adams highlights how the things we consider small really do make a huge difference to someone in the hospital. It's a quick and fun read. Amerongen did a lovely job with his humorous cartoons. A must read for not just anyone in the medical field, but also for caretakers and friends of people who are healing.

What an amazing story about a man who went against the mainstream flow of conventional medicine. Wish we had more doctors like him.

Quran is the way arabs say it in Arabicactually they say it like "Qurron"why do translate translate somethinginto english and then use arabic wordswhy not say Koran like it shouldbe in English? Why English languagehas to make compromise to Arabiclanguage?There are many example of this kind ofphonetic translations in this book .to give credit to author the glossaryand appendixes was good

This is by far the best translation of the Qur'an I've ever read. It sounds so neutral and is so straightforward. I love how he adds explanations to make it so much easier to understand! May He be blessed for writing such a beautiful translation that makes you want to read more!

It is supposed to be put in a box. It seems like a used book, damaged a lotOn the other hand, the interpretation is really great. Some other interpretations are as Shakespeare english but this ones english is pretty good and clear.

A contemporary interpretation of Quran. It is detailed enough to learn most of the tenants of the message of Islam, but it is short enough to be finished in a month with daily regular readings. Footnotes and Appendixes are excellent, references to other traditional commentary books are appropriate. Explaining each verse within the context of its revelation- a method that prevents many misunderstandings of readers (both muslims and non-muslims). I recommend this over all other popular translation books.

I have a lot of Qur'an translations but I find this one the best, as common, spoken English is used. In addition, explanations are very detail and thorough yet not scholarly. My only complaint on this particular print format is that paper it too thin. I also have a bonded smaller version that I use more often.

Very well written and easy to understand for anyone who wants to know what the Quran means. Although you can never truly understand unless you learn Arabic. It really helps and simplifies things down and interprets them in a way so anyone can read it. The only issue is sometimes the authors interpretations are extremely repetitive and they appear quite a few times, not sure if its a way to explain or put more emphasis on some topics for people who are not familiar with the subject. There is a bonus in the appendices that explain women's rights, warfare in Islam, the Prophet Muhammad in the Bible, and other things that are commonly misconstrued by general media. But other than that one issue, I think anyone who has an open mind and open heart and wants to truly understand what the Quran means and what Islam is about can pick this copy up and be enlightened!

Truly amazing tafsir of the Quran in a way that breaks it down for anyone to understand.

Gerald Rosenberg in The Hollow Hope presents a thought provocative theory about the ability of courts to bring about social change. Rosenberg considers landmark cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, and others and argues in amazingly convincing detail that the court action made little difference in the desegregation movement or the abortion debate and that in some cases a strategy of litigation has proven counter productive. This is a dramatic departure from the more traditional view of these cases that they are iconic symbols of social change. Courts because of their structures and lack of implementation power are actually poor agents of social change unless the executive and legislative branches are prepared to provide the federal teeth to say integrate schools a movement that occurred a full decade after the original Brown case was decided. Would've gone five stars but for two complaints, it felt to me that the cases like Brown and Roe where underestimated. There was still something valuable in the fact a governing body ruled that such rights exist, even if political leaders were unwilling to act. Secondly, the section on abortion could use an update to include Casey and any post 1991 cases. Overall, a provocative book that altered my thinking on social change litigation.

This is the book other scholars refer to, (to refute or support it.) Rosenberg's main concept is that litigating cases in court almost never results in significant social change. Abortion and gay rights, for instance were met with backlash, and was a drain on resources. It's an interesting, thought-provoking idea, yet had to agree with, considering how same-sex marriage has significantly effected major change.

you will have a misprint that starts on page 51. make sure that you get a new one. but otherwise the book is a very good source of information regarding the role of the courts in creating social change... or not. It is very debatable, this was the text that I used in a class so during the entirety of the book I was able to contradict or counter the arguments made.

Was recommended to me by political commentator Ben Shapiro. Absolutely fantastic book and would recommend to anyone interested in the court's role during the Civil Rights movement!

Needed this book for a class. I was thrilled it was available on Kindle. The one criticism I have is that the abortion chapters were not updated from the previous edition. Otherwise, very interesting read.

I did not want to accept his thesis, but really besides a few quibbles its rock solid. A very impressive work.

Richard Ireland was a genius, ahead of his time, and incredibly gifted and precise psychic. This book does give insights into the "how to" but isn't a manual of development strictly as a lot of new age books are. Being that this book was published many decades after his death, his writing/speaking style is a bit technical/old fashioned, but once you bite into the book, there is such a unique and authentic perspective. The emphasis here, which I appreciate, is about Spiritual growth as the focus, with psychic ability as the side effect, which to me, is what it is all about. This book is now a staple in my collection.

A good introduction for someone who has no experience in this subject. For some it may be too basic since we have much more information now due to the internet. His presentation of different levels of consciousness is very important for a beginner. The book does present a comprehensive overview of the topic and more importantly provides a great perspective for people who approach this topic with some reservation. His exercises are very effective to taking the steps toward personal development. All in all I think this is a very important work approached from a reasonably objective perspective. If you are more comfortable with a more classic approach to this subject and/or wish a good overview of the historical and broader cultural aspects of the topic this is an excellent book. However the style is a bit outdated so it may take you some time to finish the book. I recommend that you do read it to the end and internalize the message.

This is far and away one of the best books on psychic development I have read. It is very, very thorough and detailed, and the author, in addition to being an accomplished psychic himself, obviously did extensive research into his art. I was looking for a book on psychic development and stumbled this buried and almost invisible in an avalanche of other, somewhat airy-fairy, same-old books. This book stands out as so much more authoritative than many others I've read. Though I hadn't heard of Richard Ireland, in his day he was a "psychic to the stars" and performed many feats of psychic ability that were unexplained by any other means. This is really a textbook of psychic development. One of the refreshing things about it is that one does not have to adhere to a particular spirituality or belief system to read and profit from this book. Highly recommend.

I knew about Richard Ireland's remarkable life and work while on the Earth plane. I didn't realize what a scholar he was, and how well he understood the psychic and spirit worlds.In the first six chapters, Dr. Ireland presents insights and counsel about psychic development, clarified with references to the history of psychic and spirit activity. He presents a fascinating explanation of three fears that impede psychic development followed by suggestions for overcoming the fears and increasing sensory awareness. He then explains the emotional, intuitive, spirit, and A-oneness or nonduality levels in preparation for understanding how to develop psychic abilities. Throughout, he lays anecdotal gems on the path for us to wonder at as we follow his explanations.Then, in Chapters 7 through 10, he includes practical activities and tests to help the reader develop his or her psychic ability. They are his "7-point program of psychic development." He takes the reader through exercises in psychometry, telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis. He even has advice about diet and meditation practice.The book is a very interesting read for people learning about their psychic abilities or for those of us who are helping others learn how to develop their gifts. It contains exercises and activities that will help anyone work to develop the abilities that are latent in all of us. It's also extremely well written. I highly recommend the book.I also recommend Mark Ireland's Soul Shift: Finding Where the Dead Go.

Clearly, Richard Ireland had an extensive grounding in world history, science and culture. The book is much more than a 'how-to' -- it is almost a college course in comparative religion, psychology and parapsychology. Your Psychic Potential is carefully structured and scholarly, but completely approachable. I'm delighted with it.

Truly a light-bearer in our age, and a courageous path-blazer in a world of mundane conditioning. This extraordinary man had not only touched hundreds of thousands of lives, but has changed them completely into becoming wholesome and productive in their own societies. This book: "Your Psychic Potential" will undoubtably release one's own potential of power within.

This is a great book for explaining the various facets that make up "all things psychic." It's comprehensive and fairly detailed. It didn't garner a 4- or 5-star review from me simply because it felt geared more toward beginners, and I was expecting something more advanced when I bought it.

As a background: I was a graduate economics student of Kenneth Boulding in 1985. He and his wife Elise were among the most prominent Quakers in the U.S. during the latter half of the 20th century. I learned much from Kenneth, and had the opportunity to ask him questions about Quakerism in his office. It resonates with some of my views on religion and personal responsibility.When I came across Smith's A Quaker Book of Wisdom recently on Amazon, I ordered it with great anticipation. Having read it cover to cover when it arrived yesterday, I can say it is an enjoyable book for an onlooker like me, but I was expecting (or maybe "hoping" is a better word) that it would provide a deeper exploration of the Quaker vision than it actually did. It kept my interest, but I wanted more. I was going to share it with my son, who is interested in comparative religion, but there's just not that much here to make it worthwhile. 3.8 stars rounds to 4.

As a new Quaker, I found this book to be a wonderfully helpful introduction to the Religious Society Friends by broadening my understanding of Quakerism and its rich history. While my Meeting and personal beliefs are Liberal Quaker, this book is an excellent resource for any and all Quakers or for those who simply want to learn more about Quakers. The author does an excellent of summarizing Quaker history and wisdom into a compact, compelling, and readable format. Well Done!

I would not have read this book, except that it was loaned to me by a member of our book club with her enthusiastic endorsement. Neither of us is a Quaker, but the "life lessons" presented by Robert Lawrence Smith, if followed by all of us, would make the world a more peaceful, happier place to live.Some examples (all direct quotations):One of the fruits of aging is the realization that our greatest possession is what we know about life.The truth will make us free--free from meaninglessness, free from lovelessness, free from the emptiness and frustrations of egocentricity.We cannot withdraw from the process of living while we make up our minds how to live.The most precious gift life offers us is choice.There are dozens of other "nuggets," but it is the overall sense that the author lives his beliefs that makes this such a valuable read. His search for truth and meaning has lasted his whole life. From his unusual (for a Quaker) decision to enlist in the army during World War II to his years as headmaster of a Friends school, he has followed his conscience, always looking for the light and "that of God" in each person. Inspiring.

As a person who was raised in a fundamentalist Christian background in the Bible Belt until his teenage years but who has received a terrific education and who has been exposed to many influences outside of both this area and outside of Christianity, I have spent many years trying to reconcile my Christian faith to the beliefs that I truly hold dear in my heart. I believe in a loving God who does accept all of his children now and will someday accept all of them into heaven. This is what my heart tells me; in other words, the "inner light" that both George Fox and the author of this book speak of is what is telling me this. The author said that Quakers think that the "inner light" comes before everything else, and considering the fact that the Bible (while important!) is filed with contradictions, this makes perfect sense to me. I believe that this book has helped me to finally reach a peace that I had been unable to attain. God is love, and the author promotes this view through the ideas that he presents and explains. For me, this book has been a blessing. I think that the Quakers have the right ideas.

I read a biography of Benjamin Franklin and the `Friends` were mentioned a few times. I was curious about Quakers as a religion and as my own family heritage. Robert provides an excellent and well written answer to my curiosity while also helping be to understand one Quakers way. Thank you for the write up.

Excellent summary of Special Needs Trusts (sometimes called disability trusts). I have been reading about special needs trusts on legal websites and spoken to several attorneys who specialize n special needs trusts and this is by far the best info I have read. I may use an attorney that specializes in Special Needs Trusts to double check my estate plan but at least I will have an excellent background in the questions I should be asking. Highly recommended if you are planning to leave any money to someone receiving Medicaid and/or SSI.

Arrived overnight!! If you need a special needs trust for you or someone you love this book is a MUST HAVE. Don't listen to friends and family... get the book and form your own questions and the find a trust attorney and sit down and build it together. I feel much more confident understanding what the attorney is talking about and I feel more confident that I can pick an attorney that really knows what he or she is doing.

Excellent resource for special needs trusts. Up to date and well written I wish it had more information on administering trusts, such as reports and also how to get them approved. But these are minor. Well worth getting. Covers just about everything you need.

I really like the CD for forms. I also bought the newer version for access to the website, in case the forms have changed. The book is very concise, tells you what you need to know. I bought a couple other books, and this was the best.

There were several issues related to handling of assets within the trust and the management of housing expenses that became much clearer to me after reading this book.Reading this book helped form important questions that we will be exploring with our attorney, and helps us understand in greater depth what she will be doing for us. In this way, this book is helping us maximize the value we get from our attorney's services.

This book is an excellent resource. First for the family that wants to learn more about the Special Needs Trust (SNT) and decide if it is for them. It also is good for the family that knows that they need a SNT and is going to the attorney, but wants to know what to expect and think about the important issues before they get to the attorney's office where the meter is running. Lastly, it is a great resource for the DIY individual.

Excellent resource. I highly recommend this book for anyone who cares for a person with special needs. Lots of valuable information!

I have many of the Dover publicatons and they are outstanding. This book is no exception. If you are interested in Mozart concertos and want to have the piano and also orchestra parts, you can't beat these editions. The print is exceptionally clear and easy to read and this volume has "Lay Flat Sewn Binding" which makes the open book lay flat when open even though the volume is 3/4 of an inch thick.

A wonderful score. I purchased all 5 books of the 27 concertos and it's excellent. As a pianist and more so a musician, having the scores befits all to a high standard of genius work

A fairly good score to reproduce the Orchestral parts via MIDI, and playing the piano in real time. The placement of the piano part changes from page to page, so a yellow highlighter will help you to locate it.
