When I first started making cute lunches I bought a bunch of bento books. They were so adorable and inspiring, but also completely intimidating. Even if I could make those lunches, my kid wouldn't have eaten them. I really wish I had had this book to get me started. The lunches are adorable AND easy to make, using foods my child recognizes and loves (but turned vegetarian with no problem!)I highly recommend this book for everyone

I'll be honest, I love bento and I don't pack lunches for kids. This book is a great resource for adults, too! I especially like the Idea List and the Foods by Color section - what a great way to quick-pick a lunch! The list includes things I usually already have in the refrigerator and pantry. Even if you don't have a supply of bento boxes, you'll see great examples of how to add a little flair to your lunch with the basics, too.The pictures are fun and descriptions are easy to follow, and the ingredients and equipment list make it easy to take a quick glance at what you'll need. What I find the most, though, is inspiration - following a few basic techniques (pack it tightly and neatly) and flipping through the pictures, I am ready to spruce up boring work lunches! A few items I'm definitely making: a rose from sliced deli meat, antipasti bento, radish roses, and strawberry hearts.I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to add interest to their own lunches (or for the kids, too, sure!). You'll learn how to make packing a bento quick and easy, find a wide variety of examples, and you'll probably think of some of your own ideas.

I love this book because it takes everyday foods like bread, lunchmeat, fruits and veggies and shows you how to make a beautiful bento. I bought this as a gift for my daughter who is a very selective eater. She is 13, makes her own lunches and the directions in this book are easy to follow. The book does recommend a lot of accessories (like shaped cutters and molds) but that is part of what makes a bento box so beautiful. I purchased this in addition to bento accessories and found it to be a lovely accompaniment. This book is appropriate for a child about age 10 to adult. What a wonderful and creative way to get finicky eaters more interested in a larger variety of foods.

I discovered that my children enjoy kunches when I use Bento box ideas. They take more interest in their sandwiches, meat, and vegetables. However, some of the items photographed in this book my children would never realistically eat. I have often placed "sacrificial vegetables" on my kids plates (items that I know they will try, but won't wholly consume without bribery or argument, so they get sacrificed to the garbage disposal) but I wouldn't make an entire meal out of them.I recommend this book for moms/dads looking for ideas to change up the regular pb&j to use as inspiration! Actually, I can see my husband using this book or even the kids helping to recreate these meals when they are older. I do love the beautiful photos!

This is a great book! I bought it for my 9 year old son because he loves to cook. I was happy to see that there are so many ideas that include healthy foods we usually have. The instructions are easy to understand and include lots of pictures.The list of food suggestions by color is a great idea. My son has used this many times while making his own creations inspired by recipes in this book. He is very proud of his creations and I've noticed that he tends to eat more vegetables when they are presented in this way.

First of all, this is a really neat book. A lot of the lunches are based around "themes" (like animals, holidays, etc.) so even if you don't have the exact items called for, you can still often use many of the ideas to make cute, healthy lunches.The best part of this book is that my kids love it. They love to look through it, and often request particular lunches from it. At this point, they've read and re-read it so many times that it's looking a little worse for wear, so I'm now ordering two new copies... one for me, and one for them.Highly recommend this book!

Cute ideas but felt like they repeated a lot if the same food over n over again. Not as much variety as I had hoped for. I.e. carrots are used like crazy and my 6yo hates carrots. A lot of the ideas in the book my picky 6yo will not eat so that was a bummer for me.

Mr. Sweeney is clearly a well-versed policy analyst. There isn't a single detail he leaves untouched in the course of explaining how and why the California electricity crisis happened. While it does get very dense in its discussion of policy options and market operations, it lays out a clear picture of what shaped the crisis from beginning to end. Having just finished reading the book, I can say I now have a solid understanding of this very important event.That said, there are a few things about this book that I must point out.The first is that the book is not a historical narrative as much as it is an analytical document - I can easily see this book being used as a college textbook. While this is the best text I can think of for learning about the electricity crisis, some might have a very difficult time sticking with it as it gets very dry in many places.Secondly, this book was published in 2002, in the immediate aftermath of the crisis. Since then, new details, such as the scope of Enron's involvement in the crisis, have come to light. As a result, this book is somewhat outdated in its analysis of the causes of the crisis, as the author was unable to address all of the major factors at play.I must spoil one detail of this book to make my third point: The author lays a significant amount of the blame on then-governor Gray Davis and his handling of the crisis. While I cannot argue that Davis made no major errors in his policymaking, the knowledge that Mr. Sweeney could not address Enron's market manipulation as a major factor, coupled with his affiliation with the conservative-leaning Hoover Institution, made his frequent and overt attacks on Mr. Davis' leadership somewhat difficult to take seriously and tedious to read.All that said, if you want to know how the crisis unfolded from beginning to end, this book is the one to go with.

This is one of the best books on the California energy crisis of 2000-01, but misses the point about what caused it. Yes, it is true California was paying more for power than other states because the old system created incentives for overcapacity and thus high prices. Yes, it is true Enron and others, including municipal utilities, gamed the system during the crisis as deregulation provided. Yes, there was a perfect storm of a draught in the northwest resulting in less available cheap backup hydropower, causing high natural gas prices as hydropower competes with natural gas. But the reason that energy supplies were thin in 2000-01 was that the EPA mandated mothballing of old polluting power plants to clean the air of smog, or Federal highway and school funds would be withheld. This left the old power plants with unpaid mortgages on them, called "stranded debts" to the tune of $8 billion. The former governor, legislature and the investor-owned utilities played hot potato for two years trying to get someone else to pick up the tab for cleaning the air. Finally, a State Power Authority was created to roll the stranded debt into a general obligation bond rather than raise electricity prices which would have thrown politicians out of office. The domino effect of rolling this debt into a bond was the state deficit crisis of 2003 resulting in recall of the governor. James Sweeney discusses many of these aspects but focused on the details of the electrons rather than the big picture behind the crisis. Nonetheless, you can't find a better book than this one. It is chock full of tables and color charts and data. One shortcoming of this book is that it isn't for the average person even though it is understandable. It would have been helpful to include an explanation in the beginning of how the energy system in California works (peak/off peak, etc.). There were two schemes to clean the air and lower electricity rates at the same time in 2000-01 - one was Republican, the other Democratic. Both were gambling schemes. The Republican wishful scheme hoped that buying energy in markets could lower customer prices and pay off the debt on old power plants. The Democratic scheme crated a new layer to the energy system called the ISO to mask the true price so that the system could be gamed to reduce customer prices and pay off stranded debts. Both failed miserably because they relied on gambling and failed to reveal to the public what was really going on. Nonetheless I recommend the book which contains a wealth of data and is reasonably priced.

This book is the most complete and detailed account of the crisis in print, combining historical data of what happened with economic analysis of what it meant. For example, Sweeney describes the low rainfall in the northwest and what the lack of hydropower in Washington meant quantitatively in terms of increased needs for power generation from natural gas plants in California. He shows that power plant construction took off after deregulation was passed but that these plants were still under construction when the crisis occurred. He shows how the creation of two power markets and other flaws in the deregulation law created perverse incentives for power companies to buy power seconds before it was needed so as to trigger price controls. He also describes the failure of the political system to respond effectively to the crisis, such as by letting consumer power prices rise to bring demand back in line with supply.This book would be most enjoyable & accessible if the reader has some basic understanding of economic principles (eg. supply and demand) and is comfortable reading graphs.

A true classic, written in the early 1800's, but relevant as long as men wish good to triumph over evil. Scott's style takes breaking into, as it should considering the language's evolution over the last 200 years. But once you have, it's as rich a tapestry of medieval life as one can find anywhere.This is the third time I've read the book, and I've probably seen the film a dozen times, and never seem to tire of it. This time, however, has had a special reward: Instead of having to guess or refer to a dictionary to understand archaic words no longer used or whose meaning has changed over the centuries, reading it on a Kindle, with a readily available, built-in dictionary has made this a special treat. I recommend it without reservation.

I read Ivanhoe and Waverly about 20 years ago and wish that I could find my Penguin editions now: this edition would seem to lack the many (many and detailed!) end notes (which, as I recall, Scott included with the work). Without same end notes, I believe this work lacks the appropriate (prescribed!) historical context and is uninterpretable.

This was a challenge read for me but well worth the extra time spent on it. The author has command of the English language and is quite the loquacious writer. I felt it was not a simple story with a hero, but a time in history which incorporates the different peoples of England with church, nobles and the peasantry. The author has been fastidious in his research for the time period in which the story takes place and in the end of the book has listed notes of his historic information and footnotes. This is a story of Chivalry so it includes Knights, battles and historic characters as well as the famous legendary Robin Hood. I also found some humor along the way. The author also has many phrases in Latin and French and I really learned some history in the process of reading. I was highly entertained.

I enjoyed this book. It was written just about 200 years ago and set the story of prejudice, bigotry, honor, and bravery into the 12th century with the likes of King Richard the Lionhearted, dastardly Prince John, brave Robin of Lochsley, and of course, the courageous and righteous Wilfrid/Ivanhoe. It is a rousing story, however it bogs down with the telling. The conversations drone on and on with lots of "mayhaps", "perchance", "methinks", and various Latin phrases, etc. thrown in. Yes, it is possibly true that people spoke that way a thousand years ago, but it sometimes makes for difficult reading and comprehension.Overall though, I give this book four stars because it is a good story. To read about the plight of specific downtrodden people in merry old England is a bit of an eye-opener. And to see that certain characters can set aside these prejudices and do "what's right" makes this a good story.This isn't the Hollywood movie version, even though the movie does follow the story, that concentrates more on swordplay and knights in armor to stirring martial music. This is more subtle and deals more with people, personalities, and inner strength.

Don't get me wrong. I love IVANHOE. And in any case, Sir Walter Scott will not be harmed by my one star. The ONE STAR is for this unfortunate edition. First, it's on 8.5 x 11'' paper making this book enormous and ridiculously heavy. But that isn't the deal breaker, the lack of book design is.Somebody dumped a royalty free book into a word processor, and spilled it clumsily onto a bunch of pages, using a sans serif font (really!!!!????)It's impossible to read because of the leading and kerning. Buyer beware.

Those who have seen the movie will see here how the movie took great liberty with this story by Sir Walter Scott. Lots of history, and an interesting story. Well worth reading this classic novel of England at the time of Richard I, Richard the Lion-hearted. Although they are not central to this story, it is interesting how the various familiar characters from the Robin Hood legend appear here --- Robin of Locksley, Alan-a-Dale, Friar Tuck, and the band of Outlaws. Good story and a classic novel! Rich in mediaeval history and the history of England in the days of Richard Plantagenet, his brother John (ultimately of Magna Carts fame), and the early days after the Norman conquest and battles with the Saxons.

This version of the Ivanhoe book is very difficult to read (the paperback version with the burgundy and gold cover). The pages are 8.5"x11", single-spaced, with tiny fonts. Some pages have zero paragraph breaks, which are also single-spaced. As an adult, I find it extremely difficult to keep track of which line I am currently on, without marking each line as I read them. I purchased this book for a teen, who is completely put off by this layout. The publisher's name is not printed anywhere in, or on, the book.

Recently went to Tokyo for the first time. I loved this book and the recommendations in it! When my husband and I travel we like to map out our own paths and see places from our own perspective. This book enabled us to do just that!

Great book with all the essentials. Not the easiest to follow in terms of how the book is laid out, but it has a ton of information. We used it to learn about all of the different neighborhoods in Tokyo, and made sure we hit at least one or two of the sites in most of the neighborhoods. for the food recommendations, we just used Yelp, although the BEST meal we had in Toyko was some totally random really local place that we just stumbled into, and we were the only non-Japanese there. We just pointed at pictures on the menu and hoped for the best, and it was a GREAT meal.

First travel tip: anytime you take the subway just ask someone that works for train company. My Japanese friend from Tokyo had to do just that the system is just really complex. Second: If you need to find a subway exit that has a street name look at google maps, they will have the street name/exit in english. Third: google maps will get you pretty much to just about anything, the tall buildings may confuse it at some times, but it will get you there.This book has loads of great info and was invaluable to my trip.

Previous edition was great and now this has a lot of updated locations and things to do.

Kindle format warning. The ebook is poorly formatted for Kindle Readers. Missing spaces, random replacement characters, poor layout. The information is intact, but the formatting makes reading this ebook unpleasant. For example, Headings with numerals are missing spaces: "5Eating" instead of "5 Eating." There are characters that seem randomly included or are a replacement due to missing characters in the font. For example in front of subway lines or subheadins such as "dJR Yamanote" bMarunouchi" and "oCraft Beer". Overall an unpleasant experience.

I have used this and and previos versions several times. They give great advice and for Japan they are very accurate. If you are an independant traveler on a budget, someone who doesn’t do tours and stays in expensive hotels, these are great. I have been using LP since the 90’s and they have saved me hundred of dollars and headaches.

Very good guide i used for my first trip to Japan. I used it mostly to plan the trip and read about Tokyo. Thanks to the book i could plan alone my trip with my 2 boys. When in Tokyo i also used tripadvisor for reviews .

This book was very helpful with lots of useful tips and suggestions that we followed up. The organization of the book was problematic however when walking around and using it on the fly: The detailed neighbourhood maps in the back are separated from the description within the book of each area so you had to constantly flip back and forth. They really should put them together. Couldn't have done the trip without it though!
