I've read about a half a dozen books on the '96 Everest Climbing Season. Although, there are lots of editorial errors in this one, they didn't bother me so much based on the interesting story and perspective laid out here. What a creepy scenario to be led by a narcissistic madman like Ian Woodall on such a dangerous trek. It's Unbelievable that Ian got away with so much, and put so many through pure hell. Where is the justice? I guess there is none on Everest. You're on your own. This was better than fiction and it could make for a great horror movie about Everest. I'm happy Mr. Vernon told the story.
I have read all the books available regarding the 1996 Everest tragedy. And the awful characters of Ian Woodall and the sycophant Cathy O'Dowd jumped out at me (even with the drama and heartbreak of that awful night) due to their gross and indifferent behavior. I am so glad that they have been exposed and ridiculed publicly.I thank Mr. Vernon for enduring months of being in close quarters with such despicable people and writing of his experience.
It is a phenomenally well-documented account. Unlike arguments concerning the veracity of stories written after a post hypoxic assault on this mountain, Mr. Vernon leaves no room for doubt regarding the actions and outcomes of all players. What is it about that mountain that makes people go mad, long before they set foot on its slopes ?
A kind of "gossipy"' true description of a despicable jerk, Ian Woodall who was present on Mount Everest during the 1996 disaster. Ken Vernon, the author, describes Woodall's character flaws and relates how out-of-line and dangerous this guy was to himself and others on the mountain. A fascinating read ... slightly flawed with some misspelling and grammatical errors, but ... If you have an interest in Mount Everest and mountaineering ... then this will be a good read.
It is great that this perspective has been shared. Like Krakauer, people in situations such as these are not always the most reliable sources of information. This provides a perspective quite unlike those shared by Woodall and O’Dowd. Numerous accounts of them paint a picture that corresponds with much of what Vernon shared. I wished I had a map of the region open beside me as I read through, as the meanderings of the expedition were dizzying. Whatever the editing, it is worth the read for the perspective.
I like true stories about narcissists and psychopaths. The author does a very good job of portraying Ian Woodall as one or both. However, the entire book is nothing but a bashing of Woodall. It got tiresome. I did not need every single iota of every situation examined to the teeth to show me the Woodall was a bad guy. Mountaineering is filled with narcissists. I climb. I've met my fair share of people with strong personalities who care about no one and nothing but themselves. For whatever reason, the sport seems to attract people like that. I'm going back to Nepal in the fall so this book was a good reminder of what to look out for.
Very informative, interesting, & probably the most accurate book on the 1966 Everest tragedy. Enjoyed from start to finish! Don't miss this one!
I enjoyed this book very much. another view of the 1996 Everest story. However, there are so many typos I found it detracted from the writing.
