This book is well written and is very accurate as far as I could tell. I'm a retired trucker, spent 44 years at it. It goes to show most people can learn to drive a truck and even do it well enough to get a job doing that. It also shows how hard it is even when working for a big national carrier like Schneider. But after 3 years you are still almost an amateur just getting started. In this book you learn that if you don't have it in your blood, 3 years of getting paid for sightseeing is about enough. When you are making your living at it, supporting a family, it brings another dimension into it. It was an enjoyable book for me, made for a good read even if it's almost just a snapshot of truckdriving.
First off the name is AWESOME!Wanted to read something I'd never think of doing, that being trucking. I can't back up or parallel an SUV or anything with a trailer so even thinking about trying a truck got me out of my comfort zone. So very glad there are folks like you willing to do the hauling and best of all write about it for folks like me that learned so much thru your wonderful writing. Will have to see if you have any more of your other adventures in book form.P.S. You ARE funny too! Don't believe it for a minute that David is the only one with good sense of humor :)
I really enjoyed this book. It was funny and relatable. I expected a dry, boring tale of life on the road from the tarnished tainted viewpoint of a couple in trying to drive a truck together. What they delivered was a fun and often funny tale of the joys and sorrow life on the road. I learned many things about trucking and life on the road. They glamorized the good points while still reminding you that it is hard work. Their Life is an adventure and they are able to share it with the world. Great story!
It was great getting to know the Hamels. The book starts out with a little history on their life, where they have been, what they have done, and how they ended up at truck driving school. Then they start telling their stories about school and how different it was for the two of them and getting their CDL's. Their stories continue on with life on the road as a husband/wife team driving for Schneider Transportation. They tell about the ins and outs of city driving and getting to and from the customers location. As a retired professional driver myself, it brought back found memories of my years on the road. I was able to relate to them as they told their sidebar stories in their reports and email notes. I highly recommend you read this book if you are curious about what the life of a truck driver is like.
Who would have guessed that the mild, almost shy middle-aged folks I met at a meeting of people interested in prairies are the same people that "ran away from home" to become truckers!?! Full discloser here: I met the Hamels under just these circumstances, have known them for a few years, now, and at just such a meeting bought the book mainly to show off my new Kindle.Well, I finally got around to reading it, and am astounded at their intrepid spirit, humor and courage! I've always been a bit intimidated by those huge 18-wheelers, and now I'm even more ready to let the suckers have as much of the highway as I can give them. The book is a delightful memoir of their 3 years on the road, driving across country mainly as a team, but also as solo drivers -- after just 2 weeks of training. They share the good, the bad and the ugly about a profession that I've only guessed at, all these years. And demonstrated that it's never too late to learn a new skill, that setting aside preconceived notions and just plunging in to a new adventure is worth the trouble, and driving an 18 wheeler can be dangerous, scary and down-right funny...sometimes all at the same time.I've learned through the other reviews here that there is MUCH more that I need to learn about these two souls. I hope they write down their other adventures in their lives and offer a glimpse into what it really means to live life to the fullest!
Several years ago, I became aware of an excellent blog from Alaska. A couple from Wisconsin had decided to house sit in an isolated area. They detailed their adventures with the severe weather, the scarcity of shopping opportunities, their own creativity in dealing with problems that came up with phone service, heating, and plumbing. Without talking down to the readers, they assumed we did not know what they were going to describe about how to create a starter for making sourdough bread; how to patch your boots when you couldn't just go out and buy a new pair; how to mend your gloves to keep them waterproof; how to take cover when a bear wanders down mainstreet. They conveyed all this information with links to other sources, pictures they had taken themselves, and a healthy portion of their own personalities showing through. I was sorry to see the blog end when their assignment was over. When I learned that they had written a book about their trucking adventures, I knew it would be just as interesting and informative as their Alaska blog. I had not realized that over the road trucking was one of their previous occupations. Although I have known a couple of truck drivers, none of them ever talked about the job. I knew nothing at all about what it took to become a trucker. When I got a Kindle DX, the first e-book I selected was Mother Trucker. David and Shelly told about the things they considered when making the decision to become truckers. What would family and friends say? Could they even do it? How hard would it be? Could they live with each other in such close quarters? Their descriptions of the ups and down of the learning curve, the near disasters, the long hours, the record keeping, all were detailed in a way that took the reader along experiencing all the things they described. We could smell those bananas ripening in the enclosed truck. We could feel the tires slipping toward the soft ditch. We could feel the slush dripping as we struggled to place chains on snowy tires on a cold hill. David and Shelley have a unique way of recreating everyday happenings in a way that turns them into exciting adventures. Thay have a rare talent for sharing those adventures. I hope this is not their last book.
