Growing up in the 60's I have vivid memories of my parents entertaining friends and family with a variety of classic cocktails. Robert Simonson provides a terrific little primer on how to mix drinks just as good as any high end bar would serve and you could overpay for. I've always made a decent Margarita and Manhattan but after reading this enjoyable book it's clearly time to expand my repertoire. If you are looking for guidance in how to jump on board the current cocktail trend then this book will have you mixing with the best of them. Cheers!

What a fun little book, a list really of these great cocktails. His descriptions and prefaces to each chapter are entertaining. I'm working my way through the book. Only down side is the author uses some pretty obscure liqueurs that, at least for me in the midwest, are a little hard to get ahold of.

Nice to make cocktails with few ingredients and not have to use a quarter of an ounce of something that cost $50 a bottle...

Got it as a gift for my partner who's been working through it and enjoying the drinks. I picked it over some of the fancier/hipper reviewed options since the 3 ingredients make it achievable and accessible so that you'll 1) actually try to make a drink 2) remember how to make it 3) b/c the way it's categorized, you'll get a basic understanding to start riffing on your own.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my husband. I am so pleased at how often he refers to this book. It's been a lot of fun. I think there was only one beverage recipe we didn't really care for so far. But there are still many recipes he has yet to try. I think it makes for a great gift!!

Lots of fun and easy drink recipes. It's great for all different times of the year such as Summer and holidays. There are so many varieties you can practically please everyone with a special cocktail.

I liked the simplicity of this book, most everything is easily obtainable and approachable and used in more than one drink. Something for everyone in here.

Although just three ingredients for each drink, some of the ingredients require searching for at the local party mart.

Prior to reading any of Carnes' books, it is absolutely imperative that wives read the book "Your Sexually Addicted Spouse" by Dr. Barbara Steffens, who, UNlike Carnes, actually DID the SCIENTIFIC research proving that betrayed wives are TRAUMA victims (Complex Betrayal Trauma/C-PTSD) of this addictive system inflicted upon her at no fault of her own, and are NOT coaddicts-codependents as Carnes teaches (and nor are they Intimacy Anorexics or Reactive Intimacy Anorexics as author Doug Weiss purports). Carnes DID do scientific research on sex addicts and that is why he has a strong understanding of sex addiction. But he has ZERO understanding of traumatized, betrayed wives and thus it is imperative that all that he writes in any his books about the wife needs to be completely ignored - believing what he (himself a recovering sex addict) wrote about wives only brings even more severe harm and trauma to the already abused wife - yes, sex addiction in married men IS that of domestic violence toward both their wives and their children. Always remember that sex addiction is PRIMARILY that of a "drug" addiction - addicted to generating one's own sex neurochemistry.

If you are looking for a book about pornography that is written from a psychologist’s point of view and is devoid of religious references, a good choice is In the Shadows of the Net. One of the things I like about this book is that it discusses “problematic online sexual behavior” (p. 25) instead of using words that can side track the reader like ‘addiction’ or ‘compulsion.’ They have a very useful self-administered survey to measure one’s degree of problematic sexual behavior, which can help a person determine the degree to which their pornography use is problematic. They discuss addiction and compulsion, but enter the topic from a less diagnostic point of view. It has a great balance between wisdom, advice, practical surveys and diagnostic tools. There is controversy over where the line is between erotica and pornography. The word "pornography" is derived from two Greek words meaning "prostitute" and "writing." "Erotica" is derived from the Greek word "eros," meaning romantic and sexual love. There are gray areas, but generally pornography is considered to involve behavior that is degrading to one or more of the participants, behavior that most people would not engage in unless they were paid, coerced, or forced to do so.The difference between the person who occasionally enjoys erotica and the person who is addicted to pornography is like the difference between the moderate drinker and the alcoholic. Pornography addicts find themselves unable to moderate their use to the point where jobs and marriages are lost. While some sex therapists recommend the use of erotica to revive a couple's sex life, I have already encountered two people who got so addicted to pornography that they stopped having sex with their partners. In both cases the partners were reasonably attractive and receptive.Carnes explains that pornography addicts are trying to recapture the intoxication of young love. Just as the heroin addict develops a tolerance to the drug and keeps increasing the dosage chasing the euphoria of the initial experience, the pornography addict finds an escalating need of more and more time online to reach the same high.Carnes tells how to distinguish the recreational user of online porn from the compulsive user who finds it difficult, if not impossible, to control the use of the Internet for sexual activities. He estimates that there are about 20 million people in the latter category.I imagine that pornography has been around in some form since humans learned to draw pictures. Although some people had life-ruining pornography addictions before the advent of the Internet, the problem has exploded in recent years. "As one Stanford researcher....observed, there are now people struggling with sexual compulsivity who never would have been if not for the internet, " notes Carnes in the preface to the 2001 edition of his book Out of the Shadows, and 40 per cent of these new addicts are women.Besides providing an almost infinite source of sexual pictures and videos, the Internet makes possible real time virtual sex through the use of video chat. Users sometimes progress to actually meeting the people with whom they have been interacting online.Carnes is empathetic to those struggling with pornography and sex addiction and offers theories as to why some are so vulnerable to it. Carnes is the director of Gentle Path, the treatment center where Tiger Woods was recently treated. What an amazing book! The combination of Rabbi Shapira's spiritual genius in traversing centuries of Jewish teachings in order to craft his unique method of confronting the Holocaust without succumbing either to despair or to blind acceptance of "God's will" with Nehemia Polen's inspired commentary providing extra context to this remarkable text is a true miracle. Highly recommended.

I had long wanted to learn more about Rabbi Shapira. The book deals mostly with the last years of his life in the Warsaw Ghetto, and the evolution in his theological and mystical thinking as he tried to answer the question: how to maintain Jewish faith and practice in a situation that feels hopeless and where G-d has not intervened to save you?You may or may not agree with Rabbi Shapira's answers to this question. If I understand the book correctly, Rabbi Shapira came to believe that if grace would not descend from above -- G-d was withholding his presence from the trapped Jews of Warsaw for reasons not known to human beings -- then human beings should continue to reach upward to G-d and lead lives of holiness, trusting that we are part of G-d and can never be taken from G-d's presence.I gave the book four stars instead of five only because in some parts the author assumes that the reader has a familiarity with Hasidism that is true of me, but will not be the case with all readers. But the book is clearly and lucidly written, and one need not be a scholar to comprehend it.I recommend reading the book to see how his thought evolved to that point. I plan to re-read it. I also plan to buy his spiritual diary that is on sale at Amazon.

This account, found in the Warsaw Ghetto, was written under the extreme deprivations and in the midst of the horrors of life under Nazi imprisonment and murder of Jews that Nehemia Polen experienced. As a Rabbi, he chose to seek and communicate paths to survival of the soul while one's physical life is being ravaged. But this book is more than a polemic; it is a transcendence beyond suffering evils and into the holy; its compilation of Polen writings, some no doubt spoken to his fellow sufferers, that reach for - and in mounting intensity - achieve living beyond pain and deprivation. While it is a manuscript to be marveled at, especially for those who are familiar with the history of the Warsaw Ghetto, it is also a meditation on how to rise above and remain human through adversity of a modern sort. Although a slight volume, it will challenge the reader to think; for those who are familiar with Judaism that thinking will probably be easier to access. But anyone, if he/she takes the time to contemplate the contents, will find it illuminating. Clearly, a hidden jewel among the ashes of the Ghetto.

Book more than met my expetations--colorful and entertaining. The photography was great and the variety of residences had a good blend.

Beautiful photographs

This is a cute book covering the Venice cottages. I think it's the only book that actually covers the architecture of Venice, which is actually quite unique. After reading this, I wanted to own one of these cottages, even the ones that are only 750 square feet.

Just great...history of a special California local. Photos amazing...unique houses and beach scenery.This area is changing rapidly due to Silicon Valley companies relocating there...the funk will soon begone...this book really captures the flavor of this area.

I love the genre of parables—the fount of wisdom is hidden within their small form. The parables roots in Eastern philosophies are implied at best--more a strange kind of charismatic Christianity with a dose of Zen (maybe). I am not expert in these things but I found them more depressing than illuminating.

From the Author: Creating and Subscribing to Playlists in Spotify Author Kim Gilmour Playlists are what make the world of Spotify go around. All the playlists you create or subscribe to in Spotify are displayed in the left-hand sidebar of the application. You can create a playlist around any theme you want. In Spotify, you can easily turn albums you come across in your searches into playlists, too. Follow these easy steps from Spotify For Dummies author Kim Gilmour and get started creating your own music mixes in no time. To put together a playlist: 1) Click New Playlist, located at the bottom of Spotify's left sidebar. New playlist turns into a text box. 2) Type the name for your playlist in the text box, and then press Enter to confirm your selection. 3) After you come across a song that you want to add to your playlist, just drag and drop that track onto the playlist title. Alternatively, right-click the track (Ctrl-click on a Mac) and select Add To from the pop-up menu that appears to bring up a list of your existing playlists. Select the playlist to which you want to add your track. 4) Click your playlist name on the left sidebar. Your new playlist appears in Spotify's main pane. A selection of albums from the track listings are displayed as the playlist's artwork. To turn an album into a playlist: 1) First, access the album listing in Spotify. Tip: If you turn automatic publishing off, you can still pick and choose the playlists you want to publicly share with your friends or the greater Spotify community. 1) To share a playlist, right-click a playlist (Ctrl-click on a Mac) and click Publish. 2) You can also share a playlist from your Spotify profile page by clicking your name on the top right of the Spotify application, then clicking Profile. This is my first book in the "...for Dummies" series, but I found it frustrating. The author provides a quick reference to something and then directs you to a different chapter for more info. This has happend about 20 times and I am only on the first chapter. Are the the Dummies books like this? Why not tell us more WHEN you are mentioning it? I think this book is poorly organized.

This is a great book for helping you to understand the complexity of Spotify. The downside is that the book was written in 2011, and Spotify keeps updating its software. The author should publish a newer release of the book.

Although a few years old, but the core capabilities of Spotify are clearly explained especially to the un-experienced reader

It would confuse even dummies.

Too detailed for me

I own a lot of Dummies books ,this one is much like the rest,they enlighten you enough to ask more questions,which I can't find answers for in the Spotify for Dummies book. It's pretty good,but Google is your friend.But I'll read it cover to cover.

I found this book helpful for me when I became a Spotify Premium subscriber. In particular, I found the sections on web sites / blogs / apps that compliment / integrate with Spotify very helpful. This book certainly helped me get more out of my subscription / account. If all you want to do is to listen to music on a tablet / smartphone, this book will not be very helpful, as it focuses mostly on the PC / Mac interface, and add ons / links to that. Additionally, I will note that parts of the book are rapidly becoming dated / out of date. But, on the whole, a good way to get up to speed on all that the Spotify universe has to offer.
