The author is detailed in describing the similarities between personal and classical monasticism, as well as the differences (e.g. how to be married and monastic, and the difference between chastity and celibacy). The detail describes monastic philosophy, but does not include practical advice on how to actually go about it, i.e. a practical Rule. At the end of the book I was unable to visualize what a day in the life would look like of someone following this form of lay monasticism.I found the book overall quite abstract and therefore not to my taste. It often sounds like a sermon and one based on the author's personal opinion, at that. He affirms many truths, not all of which are intuitive, and develops concepts based on what I assume is Catholicism, such as the protection of saints and angels that I am skeptical of.However, he introduced to me a phrase I had never heard before, "the love in the silence" that made the entire book worthwhile.
Sometimes you wonder how you found a special book, it seems uncanny.I cant remember how I found this, but its not a best seller, more of a sleeper, but a unique wonderful book. The author, has taken a subject that is hardly ever spoken about on a daily basis, and the closest similar term might be "quiet time".He refers to this special time and focus as the silence. THe silence is only mostly ephemeral to me, but I reread and understand more of the examples and references to the silence as an eternal awakening to our true nature as living spirits, in a communion of the deepest significance, most likely in a divine aura that we only glimpse during a special moment of awakening. Yet the author, Bruce Davis, continues to bring us to and reawakens us to the truth, about our selves, and reminds us we don't have to run away or leave our daily places, we are there where we are supposed to be if only we would listen and respond and enjoy a deeper conscious awareness of the avaiable love beyond noise or conversation. Reading this book is a self-helpful nurturing experience, and I hope many will find this pearl. Our Soul and the Stars, is the final chapter, but there are no words for this transcendent gift. "The silence is the home of God" and another quote, "Everyday life is our stained glass window in the cathedral of the silence."
I have nearly finished reading this, and find it comforting and inspirational. A contemplative life out in the modern world (i.e. not in a monastery or convent) is not easy, but this has inspired me to persist with my goals. Some of the text seems a little repetitive if you read it from cover to cover, but once I got used to the style, this was less noticeable. I'm really glad I bought it.
Beautiful and thoughtful commentary on the interior life!
I loved this book. It really does a great job to explain monasticism with out actually joining a monastery. I highly recommend it.
